Pet Day: Mars reminds us of the importance and benefits of pet adoption
A report conducted by Mars in 2023 highlights the global scale of pet abandonment, estimating that nearly 362 million dogs and cats are abandoned across 20 surveyed countries.
On Pet Day, Mars reaffirms its commitment to creating a better world for pets and emphasises the importance of every animal finding a warm home and a responsible owner. At the same time, the company draws attention to the many ways pets positively impact human mental health, at a time when, according to the report, every third animal in the world still lives without a home.
According to a global study conducted by Mars in 2023 across 20 countries, it is estimated that as many as 362 million dogs and cats worldwide currently live on the streets or in shelters. The research also reveals that 15% of pet owners are considering giving up their pet within the next year, most often due to health issues, unsuitable living conditions, lack of time, behavioural problems, allergies in the household, or financial difficulties.
In response to these challenges, Mars launched the PAWS – Pet Wellness Study in February this year — the largest multi-year research initiative to date focused on understanding how pets impact human mental health. The study is being conducted by the Waltham Petcare Science Institute in collaboration with leading universities and organisations to provide science-based insights into how pets help reduce stress, anxiety, loneliness, and improve overall emotional well-being.
Well-being is becoming a top priority in today’s society – 45% of people in 31 countries now cite mental health as their most important health concern. At the same time, growing evidence shows that pets can have a significantly positive impact on mental health, highlighting the vital role of the human-animal bond in maintaining and improving overall well-being.
Mars also calls for concrete and responsible actions to reduce the number of abandoned pets. Key causes include unplanned breeding, lack of consistent sterilisation policies, and impulsive decisions to acquire pets without a clear understanding of long-term responsibilities.
Mars recommends the following steps as part of the solution:
- Adoption – Instead of scrolling through breeder websites, visiting a local shelter might be a more meaningful experience. Someone there may be waiting to give you everything they have – loyalty and affection.
- Microchipping – It’s inexpensive, painless, takes a minute, and can be the difference between a lost and a found pet. Pair it with a tag featuring your phone number – because when it comes to safety, there’s no such thing as too much.
- Volunteering at shelters – Even if you don’t have a pet, you can still help. A little of your time and attention can make a big difference to those left without a home. A walk, some company, or just your presence means more than you might think – both for them and for you.
Responsible pet ownership begins before the pet arrives home. As a company dedicated to the well-being of pets, Mars actively supports local communities, shelters, and educational campaigns that promote adoption and responsible ownership — because every pet deserves a home and an owner who truly understands what that means. By raising awareness about the steps we can take together to reduce the number of abandoned dogs and cats, we can ease the burden on overcrowded shelters and help ensure there are enough resources to care for all animals in need.
