May dedicated to mental health: Pets as anti-stress partners

Mars and Calm reveal how our four-legged friends help us find peace in a modern world

If your pet is your go-to source of comfort after a stressful day – you’re not alone. A new global survey conducted by Mars, a leader in pet care, and Calm, the leading mental wellness brand, reveals that as many as 58% of people prefer spending time with their pets when stressed — more than with their partners (32%), family members (23%), or friends (18%).

The survey, which included over 30,000 pet owners across 20 countries, highlights the powerful role that dogs and cats play in supporting their owners’ mental health — from stress reduction to encouraging breaks, movement, and mindful presence throughout the day. A striking 83% of respondents believe that their pets have a positive impact on their overall daily well-being.

Interestingly, 77% of people say they talk to their pets and describe the act as calming, while 23% report that it helps them express their worries without fear of judgment or expectation of a response. More than half (56%) say that simply having their pet nearby makes them feel more relaxed.

Our pets are a great reminder to take breaks throughout the day — a sentiment echoed by 78% of respondents who say their furry companions prompt them to rest, whether it’s from work, screens, or household chores. Over 70% shared that their pets help them escape overthinking and anxiety, while the same percentage said their pets motivate them to spend more time outdoors.

As part of this initiative, Mars and Calm have launched My Pet Guru — an interactive quiz on the Kinship platform that helps owners discover their pet’s “superpower” when it comes to mental wellness. The quiz features five short questions, after which users learn how their pet contributes to their daily sense of peace and balance.

Sometimes, the presence of a pet, a glance, or a wagging tail is all it takes to feel calm. Even though they can’t speak, pets often provide exactly the support we need — silent, yet deeply soothing. Dog and cat owners report that their pets regularly encourage breaks during the day and help them disconnect from screens, stop overthinking, or simply spend time in the fresh air. These small, everyday interactions can make a big difference in a person’s sense of calm and contentment — for both the owner and the pet.

With pets, daily responsibilities can feel less overwhelming and challenges less daunting. Our furry friends often remind us to relax, slow down, and embrace the present moment. In a world that’s constantly speeding up, they help us find balance and preserve our inner peace.
