Mars achieves record reduction in carbon emissions
Mars continues business growth while reducing greenhouse gas emissions across its entire value chain by 16% since 2015.
Mars publishes the “Sustainable in a Generation Plan” annual report, announcing significant progress toward net zero emissions by 2050. Mars has released its annual report, “Sustainable in a Generation Plan,” highlighting substantial progress toward its goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050. The company recorded a record reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of 8% in 2023 compared to 2015 across its entire value chain.
Since 2015, Mars has reduced GHG emissions in its value chain by 16% (equivalent to 5.7 million metric tons of CO2—comparable to the annual GHG emissions of more than 1.3 million gasoline-powered cars), while growing its business by more than 60%, surpassing $50 billion in annual revenue. When Mars published the “Mars Net Zero Roadmap” in 2023, the company committed to investing over $1 billion over three years—and will continue to allocate financial resources as needed until net zero is achieved.
Predrag Milinčić, General Manager of Mars Balkan, stated: “Last year, we unveiled our ‘Mars Net Zero Roadmap,’ promising to accelerate our carbon reduction efforts, and with this year’s results, we are fulfilling our business strategy of continued growth while reducing emissions. We have a long journey ahead, but we will continue to follow the science and demonstrate how responsible business can go hand in hand with sound business practices.”
With nearly 60% of the company’s carbon footprint originating from ingredient sourcing, Mars is expanding new initiatives for climate-smart agriculture to continue its decarbonization efforts. These initiatives aim to improve soil health and farm resilience while providing critical financial support and training to farmers to accelerate the adoption of regenerative farming practices.
Vanja Vagić, Corporate Affairs Manager, Mars UBBAI, commented: “Our latest carbon reduction demonstrates that we are on track to achieve a 50% reduction by 2030. While we are proud of this progress, we recognize that there is much more work to be done, and we look forward to continuing our advancement. It is critically important to strengthen our programs with farmers to facilitate the transition to climate-smart and regenerative agriculture.”
